A Revolution in History: The Jihad of Usman Dan Fodio. Direct lines of succession were largely not followed for Sultan, although each Sultan claims direct descent from dan Fodio. Lugard abolished the Caliphate, but retained the title Sultan as a symbolic position in the newly organized Northern Nigeria Protectorate. Over time, the empire also became far more Hausa in character, with the Hausa language becoming the official language. In the 1820s, Oyo had been torn asunder, and the defeated king and the warlords of the Oyo Mesi retreated south to form new cities, including Ibadan, where they carried on their resistance to the caliphate and fought among themselves as well. Bello, Abdullahi, and dan Fodio were all considered great scholars and despite ruling such a vast state, all three continued to produce a sizable output of poetry, and texts on religion, politics, and history. The dry season starts from October, and lasts up to April in some parts, the wet season on the other hand begins in most parts of the state in May and lasts up to September, or October. Another trait unique to domestic sheep as compared to wild ovines is their variation in color.

The Sokoto Caliphate was that vast Empire, which was established in the central Sudan in the early years of the 19th century, following the Jihad led by Shaykh Uthman b. Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology, composition, in the classical and medieval period of Europe, many states were fashioned on the Roman Republic, which referred to the governance of the city of Rome, between it having kings and emperors.
